My ambition is to develop technologies that improve the care and treatment of patients. Over the past two decades, this ambition has taken me from hyperthermia for cancer treatment to medical imaging, computational medicine, neuromodulation and biomedical electromagnetics.
By combining measurements, computational models and clinical implementation, I aim to better understand, predict and ultimately improve biological response to intervention. In my view, implementation is not only a pathway to patient impact, but also a powerful source of new scientific discovery.

Driving medtech from research to clinical implementation
Welcome to the website of Maarten Paulides (Prof.dr.ir. M.M. Paulides). As a researcher, educator and entrepreneur, I work where engineering meets healthcare. I am Full Professor of Biomedical Electromagnetics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), where I lead the EM4Care+Cure lab and serve as Scientific Director of the Center for Care and Cure Technology Eindhoven (C3Te). I am also a steering group member of the Taskforce Implementation of the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC, formerly CICL/e), honorary Professor at the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute and co-founder of the medtech company Sensius. My research applies non-ionizing electromagnetic fields to improve patient care, with a strong emphasis on hyperthermia cancer treatment, computational medicine and RF safety, and on bringing these technologies into clinical practice. How I approach implementation
We leverage advanced medical imaging—such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)—and precise dosimetry to accurately map, quantify, and visualize electromagnetic fields and temperature changes within the human body.
Using cutting-edge physics simulations and inference & calibration, we develop high-fidelity digital models. These models predict exactly how electromagnetic fields interact with complex biological tissues, allowing for personalized treatments.
We bring our models and measurements into the real world. By collaborating closely with clinical partners (like Erasmus MC and UZ Gent) and industry, we translate research into innovative technology that directly benefits patients.
My research focuses on transforming bioelectromagnetic models from engineering design tools into clinically actionable systems that support treatment planning, treatment guidance, response prediction, and personalized interventions. This progression spans anatomy-aware device design, simulation-guided therapy, measurement-informed treatment adaptation, functional patient modelling, and BioEM digital twins.
Helped drive the transition from simplified human representations to anatomically realistic models for electromagnetic device design, treatment planning and safety assessment.
Enabled reliable simulation-guided thermotherapy through simulation-ready device architectures.
Pioneered the translation of computational models from engineering tools into patient-specific treatment planning, optimization and treatment guidance.
Advanced the transition beyond anatomy through tissue characterization, physiological modelling and prediction of patient-specific response.
Exploits therapeutic interventions to reveal patient-specific physiology through integrated measurements and computational models.

The EM4Care+Cure lab is an international research community of approximately 25 researchers, clinicians and collaborators, including core staff members, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates, EngD trainees, and BSc and MSc students. Supported by more than 10 affiliated supervisors and collaborators, the team conducts research in biomedical electromagnetics, hyperthermia, neuromodulation, medical imaging, computational medicine and healthcare innovation. Together, we aim to improve the diagnosis, treatment and understanding of disease through measurement, modeling and intervention.
The research programme combines expertise from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Erasmus MC, Catharina Hospital, Máxima MC, Kempenhaeghe, UZ Gent, LMU Munich, Philips, GE Global Research and other international academic and industrial partners.
