From biomedical electromagnetics research to clinical implementation
Prof.dr.ir. Margarethus M. (Maarten) Paulides is Full Professor of Biomedical Electromagnetics at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Scientific Director of the Center for Care and Cure Technology Eindhoven (C3Te), chair of the EM4Care+Cure laboratory and honorary Professor at the Department of Radiation Oncology of the Erasmus MC Cancer Institute.
For more than two decades he has brought medical technology from concept to the clinic: from the design of the HYPERcollar and HYPERcollar3D head and neck hyperthermia applicators and their clinical introduction at Erasmus MC, to patient-specific treatment planning, MR-guided hyperthermia and, more recently, neuromodulation and remote patient management. He co-founded the medtech company Sensius and advises medtech companies on technological and clinical R&D roadmaps.
Selected milestones in which research results were translated into clinical practice, companies or new care models.
Designed the first clinical applicator for deep hyperthermia in the head and neck (PhD, 2007), demonstrated clinical feasibility at Erasmus MC, and introduced its redesign, the HYPERcollar3D, into clinical routine (2015). Outcome data on re-irradiation with hyperthermia were published in 2021.
Contributed to implementing hyperthermia treatment planning in routine clinical care in Rotterdam and to VEDO, a software tool for adaptive, planning-guided phased-array hyperthermia in the head and neck (2013).
Main applicant of TRIHAN, on the predictive value of treatment planning for outcome of thermoradiotherapy in head and neck cancer, and co-applicant of TANCA-I, a phase I trial of thermotherapy for locally advanced head and neck cancer (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT06761937).
Co-founded Sensius (2015) to bring planning-guided head and neck hyperthermia to the market, including European projects such as the Eurostars project SENS-THERM.
Founding lead (kwartiermaker) of CICL/e on behalf of TU/e, later board member, and now steering group member of its successor, the Taskforce Implementation of e/MTIC, with Catharina Hospital, Máxima MC and Kempenhaeghe. Lessons from its remote patient management pilots are described on the Implementation & Innovation page.
Member of the Dutch Health Council EMF Committee and of the ICNIRP Scientific Expert Group (2017–2021), contributing to new high-frequency EMF exposure guidelines with the WHO.
Together with academic, clinical and industrial partners, he has contributed to a collaborative research portfolio of more than €60M, funded by the European Commission, NWO, the Dutch Cancer Society and industry. Selected projects:
(Co-)promotor of eleven completed PhD and EngD theses at TU/e, Erasmus University Rotterdam and LMU Munich, with nine more in progress. Supervisor of more than 55 BSc and MSc projects since 2004, and opponent in PhD defences at ETH Zurich, Ghent University, Chalmers, Utrecht University, Erasmus University and TU/e.
Lecturer of Technology in Care & Cure (MSc Electrical Engineering, TU/e) and of earlier courses on electromagnetics in medicine, which received the 2010 award for best BSc course of the TU/e Electrical Engineering department. Regular lecturer at the European School of Antennas and ESHO schools.
